What usually gets someone to register here instead of only lurking?

You can tell a lot of people are reading without saying much, which is normal for a newer board. What usually changes that for people?

Some things that seem to help on forums like this:
  • Threads that feel specific enough to respond to, instead of broad info dumps
  • A few visible replies so the board does not look frozen
  • Posts that ask for opinions or source-checking habits, not just one-way explanations

If you have been around forums for a while, what actually makes a board feel active enough that you want to register and join the conversation?
Short posts, honest questions.
